Weekend plans in Southern California often involve a day of sailing on a boat. Whether it's sailing on Lake Arrowhead, or out to Catalina Island, I like to pack light... but that doesn't mean I can't look chic and comfortable just because I'm on a boat. A capsule wardrobe that transitions from a breezy deck to a dinner in the marina is the perfect boat day casual-chic style, and I've rounded up my favorites for you here - click any link to shop directly on Amazon.

1. Cap Sleeve Top

Nothing is more boat day style than a classic, blue top like this pretty eyelet top. The cutouts and ruffle cap sleeve details elevate this top from the normal everyday t-shirt. One thing to be aware of is that for some of you, your bra may show through the armholes. If this bothers you, I recommend wearing a strapless bra or a lacy bralette you don't mind showing through.

2. Bermuda Shorts

Looking polished but still feeling comfortable is easy with bermuda shorts. These classic shorts feature a one-pleat detail that will elevate your summer look. I love that you can wear Bermuda shorts with athletic shoes, sandals or kitten heels and make them a bit more fancy - they work with everything.

3. The Sperry Sneaker

Sperry is the boat shoe company because it is a brand that has been around since 1935. The Sperry sneaker features a non-slip, non-marking rubber outsole designed specifically for boat decks. They offer traction while maintaining a classic, casual boat-chic look.

4. The Chunky Knit Turtleneck Sweater

After sunset it can get cold on the ocean and a long sleeve turtleneck sweater is the best way to stay warm. I like chunky turtleneck sweaters like this one because when you pull up the collar it keeps the cold air out.

5. Sailor Jeans

These wide leg high waisted jeans are a throwback to sailor pants. They provide a tailored shape but have an elastic band in the back - these are made to stretch which is perfect for a long boat cruise.

The Sunscreen Routine

A day of sailing isn't just about great outfits, it's about protecting yourself from the UV rays. To stay healthy during a long day on deck or swimming in the ocean, here is a trio of skin protection essentials that my family and I use for our beach days, Junior Guards activities, and whenever we're on the water.

  • Lip Balm with SPF: My family uses this lip balm all year long - it's small enough to throw into a bag or clutch to keep your lips protected and moisturized.
  • Sunscreen Stick: For sunscreen touch-ups this stick works great. It glides on clear and we find it easy to rub in.
  • Aloe Vera Gel: To calm my skin after a long afternoon in the sun, a soothing application of aloe gel provides instant, cooling relief.

I'd love to hear about your trip! Share your favorite vacation story with me!

Nicole
