What to Wear in Los Angeles When It’s Not Quite Spring Yet

Living at the beach here in Los Angeles, February feels like a well-kept secret. We are currently in that sweet spot where the Pacific Ocean breeze still has a crisp, chill to it, and while the mornings call for a cozy layer, the afternoons are filled with that unmistakable California sun. It’s not quite winter, but we haven’t reached the warmer Spring weather yet. The key to embracing this transitional season with ease is the art of the intentional layer.
The LA "In-Between" Capsule
There is something so satisfying about a wardrobe that works double-duty. I’ve been reaching back into my London Edit (you can read that here) to pull out the staples—the trench coats, the light knits, the structured denim—and styling them for a SoCal vibe.
Lately I’ve been wearing the lightweight trench due to all the rain we’ve had here in LA. It’s that one piece that instantly makes a pair of joggers or vintage denim look like a deliberate choice.
For the base, I’m sticking to breathable knits. A classic cardigan or cashmere sweater is the ultimate coastal layer. You get the warmth you need when the marine layer is still hanging low over the coast, but because the fabrics are natural, you aren't sweating through them by lunchtime. It’s all about pieces that feel as good as they look, maintaining that effortless energy we’re always striving for.
Finishing the look is all about the transition shoe. While I loved my boots for trekking through Soho, back home I’m leaning into a sleek neutral sneaker or a polished loafer. It keeps the outfit feeling grounded and ready for school runs to patio meetings. This capsule isn't about having more clothes; it’s about having the right clothes that move with you through the seasons.
The LA February Edit: Featured Pieces
The Anchor Denim: Citizens of Humanity Miro Relaxed Jean. These are the foundation of my "in-between" uniform. The relaxed fit feels right at home by the ocean, but the quality keeps the look intentional rather than just casual.
The Elevated Layer: Tory Burch Gray Silk Cashmere Sweater. In a city where the temperature shifts by 20 degrees in a few hours, this silk-cashmere blend is a lifesaver. It’s breathable enough for a sunny lunch but warm enough for the morning marine layer.
The Modern Classic: London Fog Missy Trench Coat. I loved this in London for the rain, but in LA, it’s my favorite way to add structure to a simple jeans-and-tee look.
The Transition Boot: Tony Bianco Black Kitten Heel Boots. The kitten heel makes these so walkable for city life, and the sleek silhouette keeps the outfit looking sharp.
The Statement Finish: Chanel Clutch with Chain (Dark Burgundy). A rich burgundy is the perfect way to transition your neutrals into the new season.
